A brighter future for Chase and Nadine

A child who is not reading at a grade 3 level on time is 4x more likely to drop out of high school.

United Way’s Summer Success literacy camps deliver a two-week program focused on targeted literacy strategies to help students in grades 1 to 4 maintain or improve their grade level reading during the summer months.

When Jayce, a single mother of four realized that her children were reading behind grade level she felt as if she had failed them as a parent. Luckily, their school and their teacher were able to identify the issue and recommend that the children participate in United Way’s Summer Success camps for two weeks during August. Jayce was hesitant at first and didn’t want a handout. She quickly realized these camps were the best solution for her children and after the first day when they came back happy and excited she knew their futures were bright.

“I can’t fully express what United Way has done for my kids. The positive effects of literacy camp last much longer than the two weeks the kids spend there; the future of my entire family has been positively impacted.”
