Saskatoon Transit – Driving Change: A 2010 Workplace Campaign Success Story
Employee Campaign Chairs, April Nosper and David White, with the support of management and their union ATU local 615, ran an amazing workplace campaign in 2010! When asked how she came up with her unique campaign ideas, April, a bus operator, commented she often comes up with campaign ideas while driving her routes.
One of these new ideas that really took off last campaign was Transit’s version of the Biggest Loser Challenge. Over 100 Saskatoon Transit employees participated in the challenge: to lose a minimum of 5 lbs. over a 9 week period. Offering amazing incentive prizes, including gym memberships donated by Fitness Masters (California Fitness), the challenge generated fun and excitement at Saskatoon Transit. At weekly weigh-ins, participants were able to sample healthy foods, try new recipes, and learn hints and tips on making positive, healthy choices.
This creative special event was an amazing success, with over 80% of participants completing the challenge. April is pleased to note an improved morale and encouragement of healthy choices amongst her fellow co-workers; this all while raising awareness and dollars for United Way.
By running special events, canvassing all employees, and providing education about United Way, Saskatoon Transit was able to increase its campaign from $8,500 to a grand $13,000, with nearly 25% participation!
