The United Way of Saskatoon and Area is taking the lead to bring 211 to Saskatchewan. Although 211 exists in cities and regions elsewhere in Canada, nowhere has it been implemented province-wide.
211 is an easy-to-remember, three-digit, non-emergency telephone number that connects callers to a full range of community, social, government and health service information in their own community. It is free, confidential, multilingual and available 24 hours a day.
Individuals and families looking for help often do no know where to turn, and the maze of phone books, help lines, directories and voicemail may be overwhelming. A single call to 211 eliminates all this confusion. For example, you might call 211 if you are:
- A son seeking transportation for his aging parents
- A senior seeking home care support
- A laid-off employee wanting to find out about employment insurance
- A teenager attempting to deal with school or social issues
An online database that supports 211 is available on the Internet, allowing users to find their own way to programs and services, if they choose.
