United Way Hosts First-Ever #GivingTuesday Blitz

United Way of Saskatoon and Area is proud to be an official partner of #GivingTuesday, a new movement in Canada. We are all familiar with Black Friday and Cyber Monday – hard to miss with all the buzz around the “great deals”. The intent of #GivingTuesday is to bring “giving back” to the forefront of Canadians’ minds at this time of year.

On Tuesday, December 3, 2013 United Way will host its first ever #GivingTuesday Blitz. As the end of our official campaign draws near, our goal is to get as many donations in the door in one day, as we possibly can. Donations can be made in person, over the phone or via our website. We will keep a running tally for the day and post it hourly to our Twitter account (@UnitedWayStoon).

United Way is about improving lives and community-building. We do this through financial investments in local non-profit organizations and by working in collaboration with all levels of government, business and labour to build programs and services that help everyone to reach their full potential and achieve their life goals.

For example, our friend Dan was diagnosed as legally blind by the time he was just 15 years old. Then at 28, his eyesight got even worse. Due to his significant vision loss, Dan was unable to fulfill the requirements of his job, and he was subsequently laid off. This led to depression, and there were days when he found it difficult to get out of bed.

“It kinda felt like a death sentence,” he says. As the married father of three children, Dan made the choice to work with his diagnosis. He attended counselling, and worked with United Way-supported agencies to restore his sense of purpose and maintain a positive attitude.

These are the kinds of success stories United Way aims for every day. With the support of individuals and organizations in our community, we change lives. You can help us create more positive change during #GivingTuesday, December 3, 2013.

Let’s see how many lives we can change, together.
